Now is the time to check your furnace.  Get it serviced or at least make sure it has a clean filter.  It is better to install a new less expensive filter 3 times per year, than it is to install an expensive filter, thinking it will be more effective.

Also check the humidifier for a clean filter and proper winter settings.

A safety check around your home is in order.  Start with making certain all smoke detectors are operational, replacing batteries where necessary.  Now is a great time to replace the kitchen stove exhaust filter and clean that potential fire hazard - the dryer vent pipe.

To find other preparation jobs, remember what you experienced last winter and how any problems can be prevented.
